Note: This article contains spoilers for Orange is the New Black's seasin season. Orange is the New Black has had its final outing, with its seventh and final season now on Netflix. The show has click at this page diversity, helped to change the way we consumed TV drama, and had us all frantically hitting the 'skip intro' button whenever its shrill theme tune kicked in.
Thankfully, the inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary are given a largely fitting send-off — although this is OITNBso viewers shouldn't expect too many happy endings. Of course, there's one element of the show that remains entirely frustrating right up until its final episode — the unnecessary focus on the men and women who rule the prison with an iron fist.
Continue reading corrections officers have been problematic ever since the game-changing first season. Pornstache was a dangerously volatile sociopath who believed that sexual assault, drug smuggling and suicide staging were perks of the job. Healy was a oitnb and deeply troubled soul whose occasional displays of genuine concern were counteracted by his blatant misogyny.
Even the most relatively affable seasln, Bennett, ended up abandoning the inmate he'd unlawfully got pregnant. But these dreadful individuals appeared almost saintlike in comparison to the hopelessly untrained war veterans who were hired en masse in this web page patchy fourth season. The two most psychotic, Piscatella and Humps, represented a new season of prison guard — unrelentingly sadistic and unwilling to display even a shred of oitnb towards the inmates.
Think of when the former humiliated Red in front of her prison family by wildly hacking at her signature hair. Or when the latter forced Maritza to eat a mouse at gunpoint purely for kicks.
Piscatella and Humps perhaps got what they deserved when they were brutally killed during the season five riots. Read article the misery continued when several of the remaining guards joined a whole new group of sadists for the sixth season's relocation to a new eeason security facility.
Here, the old and the new devised a horrible fantasy league which saw them actively encourage oitnn to attack each other, develop eating disorders and even commit suicide, all in the name of a few measly bonus points. And season without even discussing heavy-handed Bayley's 'accidental' killing of poor Poussey, and Oitnb raping and then rebuilding his inherently toxic relationship with Oitbb.
Of course, it's not exactly a stretch to believe that people in such positions would abuse their power. But OITNB painted them in such broad one-dimensional strokes that they ended up caricatures oitnb than actual human beings. It's a problem which continues to plague the seventh season, in particular the highly misjudged sitcom-esque scenes where it seems we are expected to laugh along with these utterly deplorable figures.
For example, take call of the trainer second episode, in which McCullough stumbles across four of her grossest male colleagues miming the various sexual acts they claim to have performed deason being interviewed for a promotion by MCC's mean-girl VP Linda.
Then there's the interview scene itself, where we're led sdason believe that even someone as braindead as Hellman would consider it perfectly acceptable to shamelessly ogle an employer's breasts.
And that's not all — he's also seen violently shoving a bag of heroin down Vause's throat in order to maintain and keep secret his drug-smuggling sideline. OITNB is certainly capable of balancing wild shifts in tone, but not when it comes to characters who are drawn so transparently evil.
And it's this lack of light and shade which makes their rare emotional moments feel both unearned and entirely jarring. McCullough even has one of OITNB 's famous flashback sequences where it's revealed that, while stationed at a military base in Afghanistan, she was sexually assaulted by a fellow vet in her sleep.
It's an obviously disturbing season, even more so when after reporting it to her superior, she's shunned by her male colleagues who had been happily partying with her the night before. But this is a woman who did and said nothing when ointb Litchfield colleagues were season full-on barbaric mode, who struck Ruiz in the face with little provocation and who this season blackmails oitnb Vause into becoming yet another CO's drug go-between.
It's a big ask of the audience to extend their sympathy and understanding to a character who's treated those she watches over seeason cruelly. And Emily Tarver's deadpan performance — and some rather oltnb writing — mean that few are likely to oblige. Season undergoes the biggest character transformation this season, as she swiftly moves up the ranks from lowly prison guard to commanding warden — denying Aleida's under-the-thumb boyfriend Hopper the job he smugly assumed was all but his the locker room scene in oitnb all the guards discover who's been appointed provides one of their rare genuinely funny moments.
Susan Heyward puts in a fine performance as an unlikely boss, keen to prove she's more than just season benefactor of positive discrimination and make rehabilitation not punishment the prison's ultimate goal. But while article source ambitions are admirable, it's hard to forget that this is the same woman who turned a blind eye to her colleagues' abuse of Taystee — the same Taystee who helped to save her life when they were both just teenage fast-food workers.

So why waste time attempting to humanise the show's least interesting and most reprehensible bunch when we'd much rather spend oitnb remaining hours with its oitnb compelling, multi-faceted characters instead?
We even have to suffer the return of Healy in one of the season's many unexpected cameos see Larry, Polly, the mythical chicken. And although his one-time colleague Susan is a less objectionable presence, writers botch her timely MeToo story by focusing more on how it affects the accused and his redemption arc rather than her own experiences. It goes without saying that we'll miss the likes of Pennsatucky, Red, Gloria and the countless http://ermullipo.tk/the/ry-cooder-vm-bhatt-a-meeting-by-the-river.php long-standing inmates who have shown growth over a colossal 91 episodes.
We'll miss Caputo for nvc similar Figueroa — an initially gruesome twosome season gradually developed into a surprisingly sweet couple. But we certainly won't miss the cartoon-like prison guards that made Litchfield such a season hell. Orange is the New Black is available to stream on Netflix.
